Announcing! Facebook and Twitter Integration into WiB Connect – Free Women in Business Membership Site using Ning

Posted by Chris | Posted in FaceBook, Management, Marketing, Social Networking, Twitter, Video | Posted on 14-03-2010

I have to admit I love my Ning Membership site at WiB Connect a free Women in Business social networking site I created as a way to help others to connect, learn and grow with other business women.

I am happy to share with you how we are getting even more social at WiB Connect by integrating Facebook and Twitter into our site to make it even easier for our members to share information with their other social networking sites.  This means members are able to update their Facebook and Twitter feeds directly from WiB Connect.  This is a great time saving tool and also a great way to keep all your social networks up to date at the same time.

Announcing: Facebook Integration

By adding Facebook to our Ning Network members can now share their favorite posts, photos, events, and videos directly on Facebook.  All members need do is look for the Facebook logo when they see something worth sharing and check the box before posting. Members can share just about anything at WiB Connect.

Like Something You See? Share It on Twitter!

We're excited to let you know about our recent Twitter integration! On our Ning Network, we've cultivated a spirit of sharing, and one of the ways we do that is on Twitter. When we see something we think the rest of the world might find interesting, we send out a tweet with a link. We like sharing things on Twitter so much that we've now integrated it directly into our Ning Network. See something you want to share with the world? Click on the Twitter link to have it also post to your Twitter account. Hope you enjoy it!

Here's a walk-through video that explains how it works

Social Networking – What’s all the fuss?

Posted by Chris | Posted in Business Etiquette, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Management, Marketing, Social Networking, Twitter | Posted on 19-02-2010

There is no sign of the explosion of online social networking slowing down.  The number of people using sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (the big three) is well into the millions and is still on the rise.  With so many more people spending more time online, there has never been a better time for small businesses to test the waters and take advantage of what the big three have to offer.  It is not difficult to master the art of social networking and it is an easy strategy to implement and work to your advantage.

Social networking is something anyone can do and it doesn’t matter if you are an extrovert or an introvert – we can all do it.  If you are looking at building an online business or want to increase traffic and potential customers to your website, then social networking is a great tool for you and your business.

It is a good idea to gain a basic understanding of what each site has to offer and how you can best take advantage of it.  The three most well known social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, with each of them having millions of users online every day. Even though each site is a social networking site, they each have a uniqueness of their own.  Each one provides a different style of networking and each has key benefits for users.  If you haven’t tapped into the social networking scene and are looking at testing the waters, I have outlined a few tips I learnt from my professional training, from using the sites, and from other industry experts.

While you are building your online credibility and reputation – on sites such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn – there are things you could be doing that can prevent you from building your credibility and it can happen in a matter of minutes.  When you are aware of what to avoid on these sites, it is pretty hard to go wrong.

Five things to avoid when social networking

  1. Do not spam people’s inboxes or walls. This will not only cause you to lose credibility, it can also cause you to get banned from sites such as Facebook.
  2. Don’t get too personal.  While you want to give yourself and your business a human face, you really don’t want to get overly personal – especially with photos and videos. Remember your not searching for a hot date – you are trying to build business credibility.
  3. Don’t add too many silly applications and plug-ins to your profiles. They can clutter your profile, make it slow to load and take the viewers’ attention away from information about you and your business.
  4. Don’t do the hard sell!  On the social networking scene, the hard sell approach is not appreciated or welcomed and you will soon lose your connections.  Instead, take the time to get to know people, share information and build upon your relationships. Earn respect and trust.
  5. Never get into ‘cyber wars’ online. If someone is bothering you on a site simply block them or stop following them.  It’s easy to do and it’s better than having a verbal match online for the world to see.  Remember your credibility and reputation is online here!

Five things to do when social networking

  1. Complete your profile page.  Make sure you include all the relevent information on your profile page.  Include your URLs and a simple description of your business. Make it easy for people to figure out who you are, what you do, and how you help others. This is how you introduce yourself to other social networkers.
  2. Be sure you upload a photo of yourself.  People like to see who they are networking with.  You wouldn’t turn up to an event with a paper bag on your head so be sure you use a photo on your social networking sites.  People do business with people!
  3. Always check your URL links.  Test your links to be sure they are active and direct your readers to where you want them to go.  So many times I click on someone's link it doesn't work. There is no faster way to lose a potential client than if the link to your site doesn’t work.  Always check they work.
  4. Leave comments, compliments and feedback.  Engage with your online connections and leave comments on people’s walls, photos, and updates.  Simple genuine compliments can work wonders on how people percieve you.  When you are on Twitter and someone Tweets something informative, re-Tweet it and share it with your followers
  5. Use good common sense.  Use your common sense and you really can’t go wrong on the social networking scene. Jump in and have some fun with it.

Social networking is just one strategy you can use in your online marketing plan and you just never know what connections you might make and who you might meet.

Remember, it’s not what you know or who you know, but who knows you that counts.

Happy business building.

Social Networking! Is there a right or a wrong way?

Posted by Chris | Posted in Business Etiquette, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Social Networking, Twitter | Posted on 09-01-2010

Are you new to the Social Networking scene or are you an expert?

Is there a right way or a wrong way to Social Networking?

gro_04 With all the research I have been doing on Social Networking and studying those who claim to be and seem to be extremely successful at it, along with my own first hand experience there seems to be some techniques that work better than others and I thought I’d share some of them with you.  To help you get on the right track!

Social Networking is huge and continually expanding and there are millions of people social networking online everyday on thousands of sites.  Many people seem to be achieving fantastic results simply from social networking and other just don’t see the point of it or what all the fuss is about.

If you want to build an online business then Social Networking provides a great opportunity for you to connect, learn and share with people from all around the world, who have knowledge, skills and experience in all different areas and they tend to be happy to share.  Social Networking is a great way to learn from other people who have done what you want to do, or are where you want to be, and there is a lot of them who are happy to share what they know!

So if you love learning, and sharing what you know with others then I suggest you get started if you haven’t already.   Where to start?  There are of course the big social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and of course Twitter where you can easily start and then there are many other social networking sites specializing in target markets, industries and organizations and groups like the Women in Business networking site at http://wibconnect.com you name it there will be a group for it somewhere…

I have outlined below some tips to help you get started social networking the right way.

5 Tips to Social Networking the right way

The online market is huge and even though your competitors might be in the same industry it doesn’t meant they do what you do!  Every business is unique and opportunities can come your way much easier as your competitors and one day easily become someone you can do business with.  Focus on building quality connections in all areas of your business.

  1. Be You!  Be real.  Be open and honest and give people an idea of who you really are.  Show people the real person!  Being authentic is a popular word being used by a lot of the social networking guru’s.
  2. People do business with people!  Whether it is online or offline people still like to do business with people and and most people like to do business with people they like and know.  So get out there and get known.
  3. Build Credibility!  No one goes into business and starts at the top of their game they have to work hard to prove they are the best and that they are great at what they do, they have to earn their reputable and the same sort of rules apply here online.  You only have to look at the ones that have been doing this for a long time and have built excellent online reputations.  This is why they are success and why people like doing business with them.  If you are good at what you do and you do it well it’s not hard to build credibility.
  4. Build Your Connections!  I don’t mean go out and start following hundred or thousands of people on Twitter everyday or inviting anyone and everyone on Facebook to be your friend.  The aim is to build quality connections and not quantity. Take your time and find people to connect with who are in your market whether they are potential clients, suppliers and even your competitors.
  5. Don’t Do the Hard Sell!  On the Social Networking scene the hard sell approach is not appreciated or welcomed and you will soon lose your connections if you take this approach and you will lose them fast besides you don’t want to ruin your reputation and credibility and be called known as a spammer.  You know how much we all hate spam.  Take the time to get to know people and network socially online, that’s why it’s called Social Networking!

All you need to do now is take the leap and get started building your social networks and connecting with the people you need to know and the people that need to know you and you will be well on your way to mastering the art of Social Networking.

Mastering the art of social networking is something you can easily learn, all you need do is take advantage of these tips here, explore the social networking site and see what others are doing.  And if Social Networking is something you want to get good at you need to learn the art of if.  Learn the right way of social networking and do what feels right for you.  If it doesn’t feel right don’t do it!  Try several different groups until you find the right ones for you.

I personally have a few online networking groups I belong to and it’s been an excellent learning experience and I have managed to meet some amazing people all doing business online all using various forms of Social Networking sites and tools to help them connect with the right people, at the right places for them.

I’d love to know what Social Networking sites you use and what techniques you use to help build your Social Networks.  If you have some tips you’d like to share please feel free to comment below as it is great to be able to learn from each other.

Build a Small Business Internet Presence

Posted by Chris | Posted in Blogging, Management, Marketing, Twitter | Posted on 09-01-2010

Technorati Tags: ,

Small business owners are often busy people with little time to fully take advantage of the wonderful marketing tool that is the Internet. If you’re one of them like most of us are, you’re likely to discover that it is well worth your while to make the time to explore the Internet opportunities and build an Internet presence for your small business.

All it takes to get started is to set aside just a couple of hours a week and explore, learn and increase your Internet presence? Here are some tasks to help you get underway:

  • If you don’t have a website, get one. It’s that simple. Without a website, your online opportunities are very limited.  The easiest form way to create a website is with a blog just like this one.
  • If you have a website but you don’t know who or how many people visit it, you need to sign up for a Google Analytics account so that you have all that information at your fingertips.  You can do that here http://www.google.com/analytics/ and it’s free!
  • Next, you’ll want to increase the number of people that visit your website to look at what you have to offer. There are numerous ways to accomplish that:
  • Pay per click advertising – Google, Yahoo and other search engines will advertise your business on a pay per click basis. You can set up your own account and do this yourself, or you can pay an online marketing firm to do it for you. If you decide to take this avenue set a budget to keep your advertising costs under control.
  • Add your website address to all your existing stationary – letterheads, business cards, other advertising and marketing material, and newspaper ads. No one will know you have a website if you don’t tell them about it!
  • Join social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter. Tweet about your special offers and promotions, your latest blog posts, make new friends and continue to build your connections online.  It’s worth taking the time to get to know people and build your networks. Word of mouth business can flow from social networking online.
  • Join forums that interest you and in particular, any that relate to your business. Not only are forums a wealth of information, but most allow you to place your business name and website address in your “signature” when you make a post in a forum – which gives you a means of free advertising.
  • Share you knowledge! Are you an expert in your field? Not only can you help out forum members with information, you might be able to write some guest blog posts for other site owners. Doing that usually results in a link back to your website, and of course, free advertising of you, your expertise and your business!
  • Start your own blog! Pass on your expertise and share it with the world.  Let your website visitors know about any special offers or new products you may have.  This has the added advantage of adding relevant content to your site and if you add content to your site or blog regularly it helps improve your search engine rankings and increase traffic to your site.

The methods you choose to build your online presence will largely be determined by the type of business you operate and how much time you have to devote to exploring the opportunities.  Building your Internet presence can have a major impact on your business. The are lots of opportunities are out there – grabbing hold of them is entirely up to you!

Here’s to your online success!
